ADW and OAC: Better Together

By now, most of you have heard of the Autonomous Data Warehouse and been exposed to at least some of the benefits of Oracle’s ADW offering. Vlamis Software Solutions is thrilled to see how Oracle is focusing their efforts on this offering and believe this could be a real game changer for implementing analytics systems.

We often see people focusing on how to POPULATE a data warehouse instead of how to ANALYZE a data warehouse. Indeed, we wrote a whole blog article, picked up by Oracle on the value of what we coined an Analytic Warehouse. [include links above].

Now, with the advent of the Autonomous Data Warehouse, where the database takes care of indexing the data, we’re starting to see a shift in how people perceive data warehouses. Now they can focus on how data is stored (the schema) instead of the intricacies of indexing and partitioning the data.  Now, we can focus on how to Analyze the data.  Enter the Oracle Analytic Cloud (OAC) service. Visualizations built in OAC that source data from ADW are perfect for departmental solutions.  Because the database takes care of much of the maintenance and tuning itself, this is perfect for proofs-of-concept, and for departmental solutions, any time you want to quickly analyze corporate data.

Creating an ADW is easy – just a few questions like how many CPUs, how much storage, and what is the password, and you’re ready to upload your data.

Creating an Oracle-managed OAC instance is easy too. There are similar questions and a single button creates the instance. Connect to your ADW as a data source using that password you defined and within minutes you are analyzing data.

Sure you can spend days, weeks, months provision a custom data warehouse, with complex rules on how data is loaded, summarized, replicated, etc.  There are times for that.  But there’s also a time for a KISS approach to data warehousing too.  Keep It Simple and use OAC on to of ADW, all on the Oracle cloud.
